    International Students and Canadian Employers get good news with the Work permit program change

    Canada has added a lucrative feather in its cap apart from the world's best education system and high standard of living along with good job opportunities. Now, the international students have access to a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) after graduation.


    The Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) is an open work permit used to gain Canadian work experience, a gateway for Canada Immigration through the Canadian Experience Class (CEC). Gaining a significant amount of work experience is advantageous and a key factor for quality through the express entry and other immigration programs.


    The Express Entry program is a good Immigration pathway for getting the PR. The selection under this system is point-based, and the Human Capital factors are taken into account. The Work experience in Canada allows the applicant to have additional points in the CRS point score calculation. Hence, providing these applicants with a competitive advantage over the other applicants. The applicants with a degree and Canadian work experience will also have a far better selection when applying under the PNPs and Quebec provinces if they have studied in Quebec under the Quebec Experience Program (or PEQ).


    This new change will be beneficial for the international students and Canadian employers and will also benefit the PGWP program. Earlier Canadian employers used to go through a lengthy and costly process of a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) where they also had to submit proof that they are unable to hire a Canadian for the same job. It was not the case for applicants with open work permits, such as people with PGWP. Therefore, the Open Work Permit holders provide Canadian employers with the opportunity to retain foreign talent without the burdens of being associated with this process.


    The initial hiring process might not require work on the part of an employer, but the same cannot be said because the foreign national decides to continue working in Canada after the expiry of PGWP. The work permits have limited duration, and the problem for the PGWP starts from here. In most cases, PGWP doesn't offer an extension, and an LMIA needs to be submitted and approved before a new work permit is applied (employer-specific). This will now change as per the latest update.



    On January 8, 2021, the Canadian government introduced a new policy that will allow former international students who have expired or expiring PGWP to apply for a new open work permit.


    • The new policy allows individuals who meet the following requirements to apply for an 18-month open work permit:
    • If they have a PGWP that expired on or after January 30, 2020, or they have a PGWP that is meant to expire in 4 months or less from the date of application;
    • be in Canada;
    • with a valid temporary status or have applied to restore your status.


    The new system's application process will start tomorrow, January 27, and it will run until July 27, 2021. This new policy will bring out a change that will enable many Canadian employers to employ foreign nationals on a PGWP without going through the lengthy and costly process needed in the past.
