In 2020, Nova Scotia Province approved an increasing number of immigrants, thereby paving the way for economic recovery over the next few years. Last year there were A total of 3,517 immigration candidates who got approved, and a lot of applicants were from the essential services like healthcare workers or those skilled workers who were already living in Canada.

The immigration minister of Nova Scotia, Lena Diab, believes that the province will play a huge role in economic recovery this year. Therefore, it is focused on attracting foreign talent with specialized skills in order to meet labor shortages. The province is also looking forward to retaining international students after they graduate. In 2020, there were 1,018 graduates who applied to Nova Scotia after graduation, and it is a significant increase from only 35 international graduates in 2014.

How can someone immigrate to Nova Scotia?

To move to Nova Scotia, there are two ways: The Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP) and the Nova Scotia Nominee Program (NSNP).

The AIP provides employers in Atlantic Canada to select and hire foreign nationals for occupations that they were unable to fill. Employers need not obtain a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), but the candidates need to have a job offer from a designated employer. The Atlantic Provinces of Canada consists are Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island.

Under the NSNP, there are eight different streams through which applicant can apply –

  • Nova Scotia Experience: Express Entry - It helps Express Entry candidates who worked in Nova Scotia for at least one year;
  • Nova Scotia Labour Market Priorities - It helps Express Entry candidates with specific labor market needs;
  • Nova Scotia Labour Market Priorities for Physicians - It helps Express Entry candidates with a job offer as a family physician or specialist physician;
  • Physician Stream - It helps physicians with a job offer in Nova Scotia and are not enrolled in the Express Entry system;
  • Skilled Worker Stream - It helps skilled workers with a job offer in the province;
  • Occupation In-Demand Stream - It helps workers with a job offer in an occupation that is deemed “in-demand;”
  • Entrepreneur Stream – It helps individuals who wish to start a business in the province; and
  • International Graduate Entrepreneur Stream - It helps international graduates who wish to start a business in the province.
