Canada's Second Quarter of Express Entry Breaks Records

The second quarter of 2021 was a record-breaker for Canadian immigration. There were 44,591 immigration candidates invited for permanent residence through the Express Entry system.

In the first quarter of 2021, the number of applicants invited was 44124, and there was a marginal rise in the number in the second half of 2021. As of June 30, there were 88,715 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for permanent residents issued by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). This broke the previous record of 2017.

What we witnessed in the second quarter? Large draws, low CRS cut-offs

Since the year 2021 has started, the express entry draws have been program-specific, one Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) draw followed by a Canadian Experience Class (CEC) draw. The aim has been to convert temporary workers into permanent residents, and the Canadian government has been doing it to avoid COVID 19 complications.

In this second quarter, more draws were conducted – 14 draws compared to 10 draws in the previous quarter. Also, the Draw sizes were also greater. The Draw was not as large as the Feb 13 draw of the first quarter, but there were larger draws in quarter 2 with 6000 ITAs in April. In late June, for the first time, 1000 PNP applicants were selected.

With big draws and low CRS score Cut-off, a lot of applicants received invites.

    What is Express Entry?

Express Entry is a selection system for skilled workers where the point-based selection as per the applicants' credentials is undertaken. There are three sub-streams through which this applicant can relocate - the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Canadian Experience Class, and the Federal Skilled Trades Program.

The applicants need to meet the eligibility requirement and the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) of the sub stream they have selected, and they are picked from the pool of applicants. The selected applicants receive the Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence.

It is the High scoring applicants who are picked from the express entry pool,

Canada has a target of 108,500 new immigrants through Express Entry-managed programs for 2021.

What is expected in the next six months of 2021?

Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) and Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) candidates of the express entry have not been included in the draws so far this year.

In the pandemic, the Canada Government has aimed to convert temporary residents into permanent Residents. June 21 was a big day for immigration as the federal government exempted travellers from quarantine who were fully vaccinated and also expanded the approved permanent resident's list. The flights from India will be revised on July 21, and till now, the restrictions remain Intact.

With the Canadian government aiming to vaccinate its 75 percent population by the end of July, all programs are expected in the latter half of 2021. Even FSTP applicants can have a draw at the end of the year.
